Joint meeting of the Edinburgh and London Mathematical Societies, and Workshop on Infinite Group Theory and Related Topics

Edinburgh, Scotland

10 December - 13 December 2008

Registration is now open! Please click here to register for both the Joint EMS/LMS Meeting on 12/13 December and the workshop on infinite group theory on 10/11/12 December.

Joint EMS/LMS meeting:
There will be a joint Edinburgh Mathematical Society/London Mathematical Society meeting on the afternoon of Friday 12th December and the morning of Saturday 13th December. The talks are as follows:
Laurent Bartholdi (Göttingen) Automatically presented groups
Martin Bridson (Oxford) Dimension, rigidity and fixed point theorems
Alain Valette (Neuchâtel) The Haagerup property and its stability properties
Efim Zelmanov (UC San Diego) Asymptotic properties of finite groups and finite dimensional algebras
The full timetable is here. There will be a dinner on the Friday evening. All places for the dinner have been taken, but it is still possible to be added to a reserve list in case of cancellations. For more information about the meeting, contact Tom Lenagan (tom@maths.ed.ac.uk).

Workshop:
There will be a workshop on infinite group theory and related topics from the morning of Wednesday 10th until lunchtime on Friday 12th. It aims to cover a wide range of topics related to infinite group theory, broadly interpreted. The invited talks are intended to be accessible to postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers in all areas of group theory. The full timetable for the workshop is here .

Invited Workshop Speakers:
Laurent Bartholdi (Göttingen, Germany)Representation zeta functions of groups
Tim Burness (Southampton, UK)Permutation groups, derangements and prime order elements
Patrick Dehornoy (Caen, France)The subword reversing method
Bettina Eick (Braunschweig, Germany)On the classification of infinite pro-p-groups of finite coclass
Meinolf Geck (Aberdeen, UK)Finiteness properties of Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in Coxeter groups
Dugald Macpherson(Leeds, UK)Pseudofinite permutation groups
James Mitchell(St Andrews, UK)Generating dense subgroups of automorphism groups
Götz Pfeiffer(Galway, Ireland)Coxeter groups and combinatorics
Tim Riley(Bristol, UK) How wild can a group with a quadratic Dehn function be?

Workshop Programme:
Workshop talks will start on Wednesday morning and finish at lunchtime on Friday, before the EMS/LMS meeting. The speakers above have kindly agreed to give a 1-hour lecture each. In addition there will be contributed postgraduate talks and a postgraduate poster session.

Postgraduate Poster Session:
We invite postgraduate students to submit a 1-page outline for a poster paper by email to colva@mcs.st-and.ac.uk by Friday November 14th. The five best outlines will be invited to give a short talk at the workshop, and there will be a poster paper session for all postgraduates.

Financial matters:
There will be a registration fee of around 20 pounds for the workshop, payable at the workshop. The EMS/LMS Joint Meeting is free. We have some financial support for postgraduate students, and postgraduate students do not need to pay the registration fee. Payment for the joint meeting dinner will be collected at the restaurant: the cost will be around thirty pounds.

Location:
Both the Workshop and the Joint Meeting will be held in Lecture Theatre C of the School of Mathematics, James Clerk Maxwell Building, Kings Buildings, at the University of Edinburgh.

Accommodation:
The ICMS Website has a wide selection of suggested accommodation to suit all budgets. Section 4 (South) contains the closest accommodation to the Workshop and Joint Meeting venue.

Scientific Organising Committee:
Kenny Brown (Glasgow), Iain Gordon (Edinburgh), Jim Howie (Heriot-Watt), Tom Lenagan (Edinburgh) and Colva Roney-Dougal (St Andrews).
