Born 9th March 1981. M.Sci. in Mathematics (First-class Hons), University of Glasgow 2002; Ph.D. in Mathematics (Thesis: Presentations for Subsemigroups of Groups), University of St Andrews 2005. Research Fellow at the University of St Andrews 2005–8 and at the Centro de Álgebra da Universidade de Lisboa 2008–9. Presently holder of a five-year research fellowship at the Centro de Matemática da Universidade do Porto. Author or co-author of 23 research articles in the fields of semigroups, automata, and philosophy of mathematics. Married to Dr Yumi Murayama-Cain (村山由美) since 2007.
